Hello gentlemen, I just joined this page today and have been searching for as much information I can on an 1891 Argentina modelo or Mauser. It appears to have all the markings - that I am not sure of at this time what all of them mean. So I would love a link to something that explains then all. I did research on an SKS at one time and the marks truly told a story. I would love to learn the story behind this beauty because after creating a mold of the chamber we have learned it shoots the 22.250 and this I have found no history of. The barrel and chamber all seem original.
The Mauser Model 1889 was a bolt-action rifle of Belgian origin. It became known as the 1889 Belgian Mauser, 1891 Argentine Mauser,. A Model 1890 carbine was also supplied in smaller numbers. These rifles saw service during the. Find Mauser Model 91 Argentine parts from the leading parts and accessories supplier, Numrich. We've been your source for parts since 1950.
Could anyone please help with this project. Click to expand. The original chambering for the M1891 (as well as the later M1909) Argentine was 7.65x53mm. A 22-250 chambering in a sporterized '09 (which utilized the large ring '98 Mauser action) wouldn't present any problems, but unless you're reloading the 22-250 down to pressures in the 7.65x53 range - or less - for the '91, I think you may be asking for difficulties at some point down the line.
As an example of what can occur when firing a high pressure round in a small ring Mauser action (which the '91 is), hop on Google Image and enter 'Converting 7x57 Spanish Mauser to.308'.p.s. The Fajen stock, Weaver scope bases and Buehler low scope safety were very common - and economical at the time - sporter add-ons to what back in the day were relatively inexpensive surplus rifles.

I find it hard to believe that anyone in their right mind would go to the trouble of rechambering a 91 Mauser to a 22 250. It would cost way too much to make all the changes that would need to be made. Like the barrel and chamber to start with.
A 7.65 is not quite a.22. A barrel alone would be 100's of dollars. You could get one for 15 to 20 dollars in the fifties and sixties.I have one I received from my sister in law 15 years ago when her husband died. It's firing pin is broke.
I don't think I could give it away. You pay the price of getting it. I find it hard to believe that anyone in their right mind would go to the trouble of rechambering a 91 Mauser to a 22 250. Click to expand. That was exactly what i am thinking, why would someone even want to rechamber it much less the cost to do it. I personally see no gain to it, the round it shoots is just fine versus going to something lesser. I was always curious if the government would have had some reason for it to bring back an old rifle that was badly damaged and only way to save it was make an attempt to create a new rifle with a new chamber. I can’t come up with any reasoning an individual would go through the trouble. Click to expand. The reason was probably $$$ related. An individual could purchase a mail order barrel threaded for many of the common surplus bolt actions - small & large ring Mausers, '03 Springfield, '17 Enfield etc.
at a reasonable price and install it himself. I've seen my share of barrels sporting pipe wrench gouges attesting to that sort of kitchen table project. That of course left proper headspace open to question, and without the proper reamers and guages - not to mention a lathe - headspacing was often kinda iffy. Should you decide to reload 22-250 rounds to '91 Mauser pressure specs, I'd strongly recommend having your rifle's headspace - as well as any other potential safety issues - checked out by a qualified gunsmith. Absolutely agree with Mac, the 22-250 is way to hot for that action, even if it's been re-heat treated. What will happen first is bolt lug setback. That's where the bolt lugs hammer back into the locking seats in the front receiver ring.
First indication will be a hard to open bolt after firing. Then if you're lucky, it won't open at all. If you're not lucky, the case ruptures, and you get a face full of brass shrapnel and hot plasma. The pre-1898 Mausers didn't have a gas shield on the bolt shroud. Belgium updated the Model 1889 (later the 1891 Argentine Model) to a Model 1889/36 by changing the shroud to a 98 style. These are very smooth actions and make nice lightweight sporting rifles. If it were mine, I would have it re-barreled to.257 Roberts,.300 Savage, or.35 Remington.
The original 7.65 Mauser cartridge is no slouch either. You already have a Fajen sporter stock, Buehler low scope safety, and Weaver scope mounts.I can't see the whole manufacture stamp on the left rail, but it looks like Manufactura Loewe Berlin.
That would make it an 'Antique' made before Jan. With the complete serial number, I may be able to tell you what year, and if it was originally a long rifle or carbine. The Firearms Forum is on online community for all gun enthusiasts.
